Save the Ocean – The World Needs a Superhero

80% of our planet is made up of water and when that 80% of planet gets dirty then our whole planet is getting dirty.  Well, you don’t like to clean up the litter, but if you don’t then you are harming the water animal like the cute clown fish.

The most troubled animal because of, water getting dirty is, the sea turtle. They get stuck in a plastic bag which troubles them in having proper growth. Now, are you concerned? Let’s know how water bodies get dirty.

Whenever you throw chips packet or chocolate wrapper in water bodies, such as river, it dirties the river and this travels to the sea and fishes get stuck in it.  Whenever you wash clothes in river, you are adding harmful chemical in the river, here, you again harm sea animals.

Dumping from factory and oil spills is also making our water dirty.

Worrisome facts

The great pacific garbage patch is spread across 1.6 million Sq kilometres, which makes about half the size of India.

Ocean pollution kills one million birds each year.

Discarded fishing nets kill approximately 300,000 dolphins and tortoises every year. The dolphins and tortoises get tangled in the nets and die.

There are dead zones in the oceans that have been created by pollution making life in those zones impossible for marine or plant life.

A bird in ocean water polluted because of oil spill

Maritime trade and increasing shipping activity also release toxic material into the waters, leading to the death of aquatic animals like dolphins, fish, and whales.

The Longest River – Nile River

What comes to your mind when you hear the name ‘Egypt’? Pyramids, mummies and desert. What if we told you that this area has a river which is not only the main river for Egypt but also the longest river in the world. Want to know more about it? Let’s find out.

The Nile River is located in the continent of Africa. It begins in the country of Burundi, flows all the way through Egypt and eventually empties out into the Mediterranean Sea.

The Nile is often associated with Egypt, but in fact, it flows through 11 countries: Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. (Globe time!!!)

This mighty river has two main tributaries (branches, or smaller rivers or streams) which meet to form ‘the Nile’. One tributary is called the White Nile and the other is called the Blue Nile.

The Nile has been an important source of life for people of Egypt. They relied on it for fresh water, food and transportation. It also provided them with fertile land to farm on.

Fun Facts

👉 The name of the river comes from the Greek word ‘neilos’ which means ‘river’.

👉 It is over 4,000 miles long, which is even longer than the entire distance across the United States!

👉 Egypt is called ‘The Gift of Nile’ as most of Egypt is desert, but along the Nile River, the soil was perfect for growing crops.

👉 The Ancient Egyptians called the river ‘Ar’ or ‘Aur’ which means ‘black’. This is because each time the river flooded, it left black sediment along the river banks!

The Tallest Waterfall Of All – Angel Falls

What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘waterfall’?  Niagara Falls, right? Well, that is a beautiful place but what if we told you that there is another place which is as mesmerizing😍 as the Niagara Falls? Let’s find out about it.

Angel Falls is located in Canaima National Park in the country of Venezuela. (Globe🌎 time!!!) It flows from the Churun River and falls over the edge of Auyantepui mountain.

The word Churun means ‘thunder’⚡ in the native language of Pemon, and Auyantepui means ‘Devil’s House.‘ As you can imagine, the waterfall here creates a thundering sound.😮

This waterfall is named after an American aviator – Jimmie Angel. He was the first person to fly over the falls🛩 in the mid 20th century. His plane crashed at the top of the waterfall and it took him, along with his wife, 11 days to walk out of the jungle.🌴

Fun Facts

👉Angel Falls is the Earth’s tallest uninterrupted waterfall, at 979 meters high. That’s almost three times taller than the Eiffel Tower.😳

👉Under certain conditions, tiny water drop splashes can be felt a mile away from the waterfall.

👉During the warmer and drier seasons, the water of these falls evaporates even before touching the ground.😱

👉 Disney made a movie🎥 in 2009 called UP. It was an animated movie that called the falls Paradise Falls instead of Angel Falls. The falls have also been featured in the 2015 movie Point Break and 1990s film Arachnophobia.

Navigation- The art of seamanship

The warfare of the sea, the pirates taking over the ship, and the marvellous actions of Captain Jack Sparrow takes us to that adventurous and daring life of the seas. The harmless looking sea can be really fatal to the untrained, but masters of navigation know how to handle it.

While modern ships are equipped with latest equipment to tell you where the ship is and where it needs to go, it was very difficult during ancient times. But mother nature provided enough hidden clues for this.

The oldest method that dates back to the centuries is celestial navigation.  Celestial navigation is a navigation using star, basically North Star (Polaris), because of its fixed position. To locate it you must find the great bear and then follow the celestial map.

The second method was animals. Scandinavian used ravens (a kind of bird) to find the route.  They released raven when they thought land was near, if the raven moves to a certain direction they will follow it, but if it circles the boat without any reason, they will understand land is at a far distance.

Last method, Chronometer. It’s a clock that tells you the time zone in which you are, thus you can find your approximate location.

Fun fact

  1. Jessica Watson (16 years) from Australia is the youngest sailor on earth, who sailed around the whole world unassisted, proves age is just a number.

  1. Celestial mapping is used till dates as there are chances of electronic system crashing or system hacking.
